Science Classes for 2016

Prep Science

The Prep Science program is delivered during a 45 minute session each week in the Science Room. During the year the children cover Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science and Biology, at their level. Through investigations, students develop the skills of observing, describing, comparing and communicating. They are encouraged to use their senses to explore the world around them and to record their observations by drawing or writing. Children are often keen to continue exploring at home and discuss what they have learnt in Science.

Grade 1 Science

The Grade 1 Science program is delivered during a 45 minute session each week in the Science room. During the year the children cover Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science and Biology, at their level. In Grade 1 the children are beginning to record their observations and investigation results in a simple table. They are also able to predict what they think will happen in an investigation. Children are often keen to continue exploring at home and discuss what they have learnt in Science. An excursion to Ecolinc has been planned for Grade 1 students in Term 4. It will enhance their dinosaur unit taking place during Science sessions. There will be no cost for this excursion, just a signed note closer to the date.

Grade 2 Science

The Grade 2 Science program is delivered during a 45 minute session each week in the Science room. During the year the children cover Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science and Biology, at their level. In Term 4 a Science Excursion to EarthEd has been organised to enhance their Physics unit on Simple Machines. The excursion is fully funded, so no payment is required, just a signed note. Further information will be supplied closer to the date. The Grade 2 children may participate in the Science Fair on Monday 8th August. They are able to work in a team and may be helped by parents, to present an investigation to the whole school community. More information will be circulated closer to the date.

Grade 3 Science

During Semester 1, the Grade 3 children have a fortnightly 1 ½ hour session of Science. During Semester 2, interested children have the opportunity to attend a fortnightly Science Club. During Science Grade 3 children will cover a Chemistry and a Physics unit. In Term 1, a fully funded incursion has been organised. The energy trailer from EarthEd will visit to talk about energy sources, with hands on activities and experiences. The children are also encouraged to participate in the Science Fair on Monday 8th August. Parental assistance in completing their investigation is most helpful, and attendance by parents at the Science Fair makes the day even more exciting. Further information will be circulated closer to the date.

Grade 4 Science

During Semester 1, interested children have the opportunity to attend a fortnightly Science Club. During Semester 2, the Grade 4 children have a fortnightly 1 ½ hour session of Science. During Science, Grade 4 children will cover a Chemistry and a Physics unit. The children are encouraged to participate in the Science Fair on Monday 8th August. Parental assistance in completing their investigation is most helpful, and attendance by parents at the Science Fair makes the day even more exciting. Further information will be circulated closer to the date. A fully funded Science Excursion to EarthEd has been planned for Term 4 to enhance the Physics unit. The children will participate in a robotics day, where they will learn how to build and program Lego robots. This has proved to be a most popular and successful day in the past.

Grade 5 Science

During Semester 1, the Grade 5 children have a fortnightly 1 ½ hour session of Science. During Semester 2, interested children have the opportunity to attend a fortnightly Science Club. During Science, Grade 5 children will cover a Chemistry and a Physics unit. With guidance, they will learn how to pose questions for a scientific investigation and predict what might happen. They will test predictions by gathering data and organising it into tables and graphs. To put this into practice all Grade 5 children will be expected to complete and present an investigation for the Science Fair on Monday 8th August. They can work in teams or on their own and parental assistance is encouraged. More information will be distributed at the end of Term 1.   To assist with their studies a fully funded Science excursion has been booked for Term 1. During their visit to EarthEd in Ballarat they will learn about chemical reactions through hands on experiments and demonstrations.

Grade 6 Science

During Semester 1, interested Grade 6 children have the opportunity to attend a fortnightly Science Club. During Semester 2, the Grade 6 children have a fortnightly 1 ½ hour session of Science. During Science, Grade 6 children will cover a Chemistry and a Physics unit. With guidance, they will learn how to pose questions for a scientific investigation and predict what might happen. They will test predictions by gathering data and organising it into tables and graphs. They can work in teams or on their own and parental assistance is encouraged. More information will be distributed at the end of Term 1. To assist with their studies a fully funded Science excursion has been booked for Term 4. During their visit to EarthEd they will learn about electrical circuits through hands on experiments and demonstrations.
